Portraiture: A portrait is a complex reflection or alteration of a persons inner and outer features.
This post applies to the definition because a portrait can portray an individual in their natural state. However, a portrait can also depict an altered version of the individual to make their external features stand out. This can be used on their internal features as well to capture the real or fixed emotion in the individual. Inner features of a person can also be shown by use of props in a portrait because they can enhance or reflect a certain trait in a person such as wealth, musical ability, love, etc. Lastly, the essence of a portrait falls in the hands of the artist. The artist chooses what they want to bring out in their art which is why similar portraits can have completely opposite meanings.
